Recognition of Kosovo should be the first step
The broad thrust of European policy has long been the establishment of democracy and the promotion of stability. There are cases, though, where the two do not coincide, where stability is the enemy of democracy, because the status quo, though oppressive, guarantees stability in the short term.

The Power of Freedom - Central and Eastern Europe after 1945
The Centre for European Studies (CES), the political foundation of the European People’s Party (EPP), is pleased to invite you to a meeting with Mart Laar, Chairman of Estonia’s IRL Party and a former Prime Minister of Estonia, who will be launching in Brussels his book, entitled The Power of Freedom: Central and Eastern Europe after 1945. The Power of Freedom describes a gripping journey through the history of Central and Eastern Europe, mapping the anticommunist resistance and the changes of 1989. It offers a detailed analysis of alternative models of post-communist transition and successful integration of Central and Eastern European countries into the Euro–Atlantic structures. It is a book about courage and solidarity. It is also a book about freedom and democracy winning over fear and oppression. For all those who want to hear clear political opinions from an author who himself played an important role in the fall of communism and Europe’s changes in the last 20 years, this book, and its presentation, should not be missed.

Kept in a trap?
The Gaza crisis has to be seen as a symptom of the profoundly difficult relationship between Israel and Palestine. Why has it been impossible to find a solution to the conflict between them? The easy answer is to blame one side or other for being the more responsible. Both sides profess that they do indeed want a peaceful outcome, but what actually takes place says something else.

A real cooperation between EU and Russia
Russia has a long running problem with the EU, seeing the West as primarily responsible for the collapse of the Soviet Union, for the loss of superpower status and for the chaos of the Yeltsin years. At the same time, Russia faces a number of intractable problems, which ought to impel it towards looking for support from the West, but Moscow's dislike of the EU persists.

Trianon
This Europe of ours is enormously varied, perspectives are different and it can be hard work trying to understand one another’s problems and have them understood.

Georgia: Test Case of EU
The EU's relationship with Georgia raises far-reaching questions about what the EU is and what it aspires to. In many respects, this relationship is likely to be a test case of Europe's commitment to its proclaimed values of solidarity, human rights and democracy.

"1989 with 20/20 hindsight"
The collapse came unexpectedly and neither the West nor the communist elites were prepared for the transformation. There was no intellectual input, just bureaucratic regulation, with some support from Western political parties, but the Social Democrats were more complicit with communism than was evident at the time.

"Azerbaijan is the potential energy supplier, in the simplest terms"
It should not just be the EU that Azerbaijan should be lobbing, but should also provide information to the world media - which is not happening. I don’t know for example whether Western knowledge might help Azerbaijan to overcome this situation. For the time being Azerbaijani case is presented rather weakly - Prof. Schöpflin sad in an interwiev with Saadat Kadyrova

The Slovak-Hungarian 'cold war'
It seldom makes the headlines, but to anyone who follows these things, it's obvious - relations between Slovakia and Hungary could hardly be worse. It's no exaggeration to call it a kind of cold war.

The dangerous politics of market radicalism
The crisis of 2008 is a consequence of the pervasive impact of market-driven ideology and policy on political, economic and social life across the globe. The profound consequences - being felt severely in countries such as Hungary - demand a wholesale rethinking of the role of the state in modern societies.
