One minute speech - Heiligenkreuz incinerator
In his one minute speech on 23rd March Prof. György Schöpflin MEP spoke against the incinerator planed on the Hungarian Austrian border, in Heiligenkreuz.
The story is clear. A few hundred metres from the Hungarian border, in Heiligenkreuz, an Austrian village, an Austrian company is planning to build an incinerator with a vast capacity. On the Hungarian side, in the town of Szentgotthárd, this is seen as unacceptable, for environmental and other reasons. During the last two years, there have been frequent protests on the Hungarian side, but the Austrians refuse to take any notice of this. The result is a growing anti-Austrian sentiment which is beginning to threaten the traditionally good relations betwen the two countries. We would ask the Austrians to modify the plans, taking the Hungarian standpoints into account, and call a halt to the project.
